Sporty and smart: Maruti Suzuki launches A-star, hopes new model will drive sales

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) has unveiled its new 5-door hatchback, the powerful, compact and light weight, state-of-art and sporty looking 'A-star' to fuel new excitement in the slumping small car market segment.

"November and December are usually tough months for car makers. Knowing that very well, we are launching the A-Star so that it can bring excitement to the market," said Mayank Pareek, executive office (marketing and sales), MSIL.

"A-star delivers a fantastic driving experience with futuristic looks and it is the most relevant car that addresses the needs of today's customers, be it India or any other part of the world," Pareek said on the sidelines of the launch in New Delhi on November 19.

MSIL, which controls about 56 percent market share in the small car segment, said A-star is an environment-friendly car that meets the Euro-V norms and boasts of excellent fuel efficiency, high performance, lower emission, best-in-class safety features, and "fantastic driving experience."

Ninety-five percent of the parts used in the A-star car, a MSIL official said, are indigenous and 85 percent of the parts in the car are recyclable and free from hazardous materials like Lead, Cadmium, Mercury and Chromium.

Equipped with the new-generation three-cylinder, lightweight aluminum 998cc K10B engine, A-star offers power of 67ps @ 6200 rpm and torque of 90Nm @ 3500 rpm.

MSIL claims that according to the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the A-Star delivers a mileage of 19.59 km per liter.

A-star is available in India in three variants (Lxi, Vxi and Zxi) at a price of Rs.346,775 upwards (Delhi ex-showroom price) and MSIL plans to export it in 150 countries across Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, Asia, Australia and Africa.

MSIL has set an overall ambitious export target of 200,000 units by 2010-11. "Our initial plan is to sell 50,000 A-Star cars in the domestic market and 100,000 cars in the European market," said M.M. Singh, managing executive officer (production), MSIL.

A-star car, which is expected to take on Hyundai i10, is Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp.'s fifth World Strategic Model. Suzuki holds 56 percent stake in New Delhi-based MSIL.
